School Zone Awareness

The “Safe Route To School” sidewalk along Will-Center Road was built so that Monee Elementary School students can walk safely to school every day. To make sure it stays that way the Monee Police Department has recently enhanced speed enforcement in that area because of the public outcry that vehicles are speeding in that zone. Even when school is not in session the speed limit is only 25 MPH.

We would much rather monitor traffic traveling at the posted speed then cite motorists for violations which make the safe route less safe for everyone. Please slow down and drive safely.

625 ILCS 5/11-605: Special speed limit while passing schools indicates that on a school day when school children are present and so close thereto that a potential hazard exists because of the close proximity of the motorized traffic, no person shall drive a motor vehicle at a speed in excess of 20 miles per hour while passing a school zone or while traveling on a roadway on public school property or upon any public thoroughfare where children pass going to and from school.

A school day shall be defined as 7:00am through 4:00pm. Per state law the first violation will be a minimum fine of $200 and secondary violation will be a minimum fine of $350.
