ComEd 18-Mile Transmission Rebuild Project
Municipal leaders in Will County met recently with ComEd to collaborate on plans to modernize the 18-Mile transmission line that runs south from Frankfort, Illinois on the west to the community of Demotte, Indiana, located near the Illinois border about one hour from Chicago. The project impacts transmission facilities in Frankfort, University Park, Monee, and Crete. The first phase of the project includes soil studies which got underway in June.
The project involves the demolition and removal of 110 existing steel lattice transmission towers. The aging towers will be replaced with modern monopole steel structures alongside the installation of upgraded electrical wires.
- Project Scope: Reconstructing 17.7 miles of transmission lines.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: ComEd will replace existing lattice towers with modern monopoles and enhance all wiring. The new monopole structures feature a smaller base diameter than current. square lattice structures, reducing their impact on the ground.
- Benefits
- Facilitate new service while adhering to transmission system performance standards.
- Enhance the reliability of the transmission system.
- Strengthen and improve the overall efficiency of the electrical network.
- Increase resilience against severe weather conditions.
Estimated Project Timeline (Subject to change)
- March 2025 to June 2025: Preliminary work, soil studies
- July 2025 to December 2025: Foundation setting and matting
- August 2025 to January 2027: Electrical construction
Monee - Transmission Upgrade:
- Scope: Installation of 46 new foundations, removal of existing lattice structures, and installation of monopoles.
